My daughter is 6 months old today, so to celebrate I decided to start a blog.
In her honor, my first post is a DIY headband for her 1/2 birthday.
I found a tutorial for a version of this headband here and made one for my friend's daughter. I thought that I could put a little spin on it and make it my own, here is what happened:
1st.
I got all my supplies together: scissors, ruler, hot glue gun, glue sticks, a pencil....
and fabric. I decided to use some of her onesies from her smaller days, I can't believe she used to fit in these!
2nd.
I cut up the onesie, cutting off the arms and the snaps. *Tip: be sure to remove baby prior to cutting ;) *Then I cut one of the side seams open....
and then cut 6 strips that were about 1/2" wide. I wouldn't go any narrower than that, could cause some rippage in the later steps.
I stretched the strips a bit to give them some more length. I pulled a couple too hard and ripped them, oops...
3rd.
Time to braid!
After braiding, you should have 2 braids about 15-20 inches long. I am showing 4 here because I got excited. This is definitely the longest step, but keeps the fingers nimble and arthritis free!
4th.
Let's knot this baby band! So, I am hoping that the photos show you how to make the knot. When I made it I didn't even look at the text, but I will try to explain for those who need the words...
Take one braid and make a rainbow shape, then put the right end over the left.
Take the other braid and make an upside down rainbow shape on top of the other braid. Take the right end of the top braid and slip it under the right end of the bottom braid.
Okay, this is where the pictures will help! Take the left end of the top braid and bring it under the bottom braid loop. Take the right end of the top braid and put it over the right side loop of the bottom braid then under the top braid's left end and then back over the left side of the bottom braid's loop. Don't give up!
Start to gently pull the strings a little bit at a time until the knot gets as tight as you want it. I had to pull each string separately.
5th.
Hot glue time! I love this stuff, except when I get hot glue scars, that never impresses people...
Measure the desired length for your band. My band was about 15 inches long, or so.
Cut a 1 inch by 2 inch piece from the onesie. Glue one end then the other to the middle of the fabric strip. Then fold over the strip and glue to secure.
You could also sew this part and skip the hot glue, I wouldn't think any less of you.
6th.
Have your happy baby try on her new baby band!
